History
Barnstable, MA was first settled in 1602 but not officially incorporated as a town until 1639. Like the other Cape Cod towns, Barnstable was settled by the English and focused primarily on fishing, salt, and agriculture. By 1666, Nicholas Davis built the first warehouse in the area and was used for oysters, then 24 years later the first permanent residence was built by Edward Coleman Jr.
